Gothic

The style that succeeded Romanesque throughout Europe, characterised most obviously by the use of pointed arches and also by rib vaults, flying buttresses and elaborate window tracery. It began in France in the 1140s and flourished in many places into the 16th Century, windows generally becoming an increasingly prominent feature.
