Arts and Craft
A late 19th and early 20th century architectural style based on the revival of traditional crafts (such as carpentry and glassmaking) and natural materials.
Spurred on by William Morris's disgust at what he perceived as the dehumanising tendencies of the factory system and mass production, a group of designers and architects attempted to revive the traditions of simple handicraft techniques in 19th century Britain.
In architecture they looked at the tradition of mills, barns and cottages as an inspiration and at the aesthetics of the medieval period. This design tendency spread across much of Europe to Australia and America.
