Art Nouveau

A style of art and architecture that was fashionable between 1890 and 1910, and particularly strong in Belgium, France, Germany, and Austria. The movement embraced architecture, design, and visual arts. It was a break away from past styles of decoration and drew inspiration from natural forms such as plants, waves and flames, rather than historically derived elements.

Its influence is visible in some Arts and Crafts and Edwardian buildings, particularly in terms of decorative glazing and interiors. The movement lost its momentum by 1914.

In Britain, Charles Rennie Mackintosh was an important exponent: in Spain, Antonio Gaudi was the leading figure.
